Leibniz’s Universal Characteristic

For much of his life, Leibniz chased one of the most ambitious intellectual dreams of the early modern period: the universal characteristic. He envisioned a symbolic language capable of expressing the entirety of human knowledge, a tool that would transform reasoning into a form of calculation.

In April 1679, Leibniz attempted to turn this dream into a reality. He wrote to his employer, Duke Johann Friedrich, outlining the benefits of such a system and requesting a meeting to secure the funding and support needed to develop it. The duke granted him an audience, and the meeting seems to have sparked momentum. The following day, Leibniz sent the duke an essay along with a renewed plea for support. Though this went unanswered, Leibniz quickly produced nine foundational essays exploring the mechanics of his characteristic:

In these writings, Leibniz initially experimented with an arithmetic of logic. He assigned specific numbers to fundamental concepts. To form a composite idea, you simply multiplied the constituent terms. For example, if the concept ‘animal’ was represented by 2 and ‘rational’ by 3, then the concept ‘human being’ (a rational animal) would be represented by 6. Reasoning then became a matter of checking numerical relations. If the number for a predicate (e.g., ‘rational’) was a factor of the number for the subject (e.g., ‘human being’), then the statement was true. This was the birth of his containment theory of truth: the idea that in any true proposition, the concept of the predicate is already contained within the subject.

Leibniz was a genius, but he was also a pragmatist. He quickly recognised the staggering difficult of assigning unique numbers to every possible concept. Consequently, his April 1679 essays show a fascinating transition. He began moving away from a strictly arithmetical model toward a more flexible, algebraic system using letters. This shift allowed for a more general symbolic logic—the very kind of thinking that would eventually pave the way for modern computing and formal logic.

Unfortunately, the intellectual ambition of the project far outstripped the practical support available to him. Leibniz repeatedly sought collaborators and patrons. He reached out to figures connected with the Royal Society, including Theodor Haak and Robert Hooke, but these exchanges never bore fruit, largely due to Leibniz’s own suspicions about Hooke. Appeals to theologians, jurists, and princes met with similar silence.

The result was a historical paradox. Leibniz had conceived a project that anticipated the digital age, yet he was left to pursue it in the spare moments between his duties as a librarian, historian, and diplomat. In later years, he would reflect with frustration on the lack of time and support available for what he regarded as his most important work. What survives of this project is a body of manuscripts that reveals both the scale of his ambition and the originality of his thought. The universal characteristic was never completed. But in its fragments, we glimpse a striking idea: that reasoning itself might be transformed into a form of calculation, and that clarity, certainty, and even agreement might follow.

It is a pleasure to share that all nine of Leibniz’s pivotal April 1679 essays are included in the volume Universal Language, Characteristic, Logic, Encyclopaedia, and General Science (part of the Leibniz’s Philosophical Papers 1677—1686 series). Of these nine essays, four have never before appeared in English, and a fifth is presented in its entirety for the first time.
